Born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa, to Maye (née Haldeman, dietitian) and Errol Musk (engineer). As a child, Elon was introverted and often bullied, retreating into books. He later recalled that the heroes in his favorite fantasy and science-fiction novels "always felt a duty to save the world".
In 1979, his parents divorced, increasing family tensions. Musk's interest in technology developed early; at age 12, he coded and sold a video game called Blastar.
At age 17 (1989), he emigrated to Canada with his family, partly to avoid mandatory South African military service. He studied at Queen's University for two years, then transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned dual bachelor's degrees in economics (Wharton) and physics by 1995.
In 1995, Musk briefly enrolled in a PhD program in applied physics at Stanford University but dropped out after just two days to pursue business opportunities. He moved to North America because it offered "the most likely" path to build a life in technology.
His childhood in Apartheid-era South Africa was marked by creative resilience. He coped with loneliness and bullying by voraciously reading science fiction and fantasy, which shaped his worldview and ambitions.

Elon Musk on his decision to enter the space industry
On August 7, 2018, Musk tweeted he was considering taking Tesla private at $420/share with "funding secured," causing Tesla's stock to jump. The SEC charged him with securities fraud. Musk and Tesla settled by each paying $20M fines, and Musk agreed to step down as chairman and have his tweets vetted.
After acquiring Twitter, Musk's minimal-moderation approach alarmed many. He reinstated previously banned accounts and had a chaotic rollout of new rules. Critics argued his "free speech at all costs" model could turn the platform into an extremist enclave.
U.S. safety investigators opened a probe in 2024 into Tesla's Full Self-Driving software after multiple crashes, including a fatality. Critics allege Musk over-hypes Tesla's Autopilot capabilities.
Musk is known as a demanding boss. He has publicly opposed unions and told workers to put company before politics. Tesla has seen multiple rounds of layoffs (2018, 2023–24).
The lasting impact of Elon Musk's ventures across multiple industries
Under Musk's leadership, SpaceX became the first private company to send a payload to orbit and dock with the ISS (2012), and first to launch humans into orbit (2020). Falcon 9's reusability has revolutionized launch economics. Musk's advocacy has revived public interest in Mars exploration.
Tesla's success made electric vehicles desirable worldwide. The Model S's awards and the Model 3's volume sales proved EVs can compete with gas cars. Tesla's Gigafactories and battery innovations have accelerated renewable energy adoption.
By founding OpenAI and xAI, Musk has shaped debates on AI safety. Neuralink's human trials signal progress toward brain-computer interfaces. Though still nascent, these ventures may have long-term impact on technology-human interfaces.
Musk is a ubiquitous cultural figure who has inspired legions of followers. In 2021 he was named Time Person of the Year. His iconic status is cemented through media portrayals and his distinctive entrepreneurial philosophy.
Elon Musk's career is defined by grandiose ambitions and uneven execution. He has pioneered multiple high-tech fields simultaneously. Whether championed or criticized, his impact is undeniable: he put private enterprise in space, made EVs cool, and forced entrenched industries to change. His trajectory exemplifies a high-risk, high-reward entrepreneurial philosophy.
